21 Week Survey

How far along? 20 weeks,3 Days.

How Big is Baby: Baby is the size of a banana. That makes zero sense seeing as last week I was a cantaloupe. Anyway.....

Symptoms: Still feeling really, really good. A small amount of round ligament pain but it's not terribly painful or anything.

My hips hurt if I sit on a surface that's too soft for too long. Again, manageable.

Total weight gain/loss: I think I gained about a pound from my last appointment, but I haven't weighed myself in a few days... Hopefully I'll remember tomorrow.
Maternity clothes? Most of time. Today I have on a regular top and sweater with my maternity jeans.
Sleep: I sleep very soundly a night. Still waking up once a night to pee and sometimes adding a second....  the end of solid sleep is near I believe.
Best moment this week: Smiling unconrtrollably because I know next Friday is ultrasound day!
Movement: A lot in the morning after breakfast and again around lunch time. This little one will remind me if we haven't eaten in awhile. And right before bedtime we like to practice our karate moves.
Food cravings: Still in love with ice cold water.

Gender: As I told my co-worker this morning. I'm saying this baby is a boy until proven otherwise.

Labor Signs: No, thank you

Belly Button in or out? Still an innie and a very wide innie at that. I could probably stick a marble in there.
What I miss: Always the following:

Raw Sushi, Wine, Beer, Pants with zippers and snaps, Spinning, Running, Staying Up Late

What I am looking forward to: Next Friday!

Weekly Wisdom: Embrace it, it won't last long.
Milestones: Does it count as a milestone if you're having trouble bending over to tie your shoe?
If not, I got back into working out and it feels amazing. I love it.

What I Could Have Done

From my senior year in college to my junior year of college I donated blood regularly. I must say, doing so really kicks my butt. I don't have the typical reaction where I feel a little faint and all is cured by a free cookie or a piece of pizza. Instead, I pass out and the rest of my day is typically ruined. However, I continued to do so. Passing out and feeling a little crappy is a small price to pay to help someone in need.

That was until I had surgery.

In July of 2006 I had an minor out patient procedure that required me to be under full anesthesia. I had never had a problem with blood, needles, IV lines, hospital or anything medical up until that day. Unfortunately, the time I spent in pre-op did not go well. My veins wouldn't perk, three nurses attempted to start my line and all of them failed. I passed out, blood shot across the room, it wasn't pretty.

The nurses decided to call in the anesthesiologist. They kept telling me how good he was at starting lines and how nice he was and yadda, yadda, yadda. I was ready for price charming to come walking through the curtain with the picture they painted. Instead, the nurse came back and said in the most nonchalant way "Well, we found out Dr. So and So is on staff today. He can start your line." and she promptly left.

Dr. So and So quickly got renamed Dr. CreepShow. He was skinny, pale, old and had piercing  green eyes and a pointy little nose. He looked like the evil character in any known Disney movie or perhaps Mr. Burns from the Simpson's.I was immediately not impressed and a wee bit scared.

Dr. CreepShow recited me a poem while he started me IV. What poem you ask? Oh this one:

The Spider And The Fly
Mary Howitt

‘ ’Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy,

The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,

And I’ve got many curious things to show when you are there.’

‘Oh, no, no,’ said the little fly, ‘to ask me is in vain,

For whoever goes up your winding stair can ne’er come down again.’

Needless to say, I was freaked out. My mom sat across from me wide eyed and speechless. CreepShow got my IV started, after blowing up my elbow and hand on the left side. And then he said something about me being so petite, I must have petite veins.

For the record, at the time I was 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighed 132 pounds. Petite, probably but that petite? Unlikely.

Ever since, needles, IVs, hospitals in general have brought out the fear of God in me. It never ends well. I pass out, I throw up, I get hot and I cry. (Not in that order, but still).

I never donated blood again. I could barley get myself into the lab for blood work, Mr. Berg has been to every blood related appointment since I got pregnant. I'm sure he comes mostly for support but I wouldn't put it past him that he comes to ensure I actually go. Every time I go, I can't help but think of that one terrible experience that has ruined me for all future donations.

None the less, back in 2006, two full years after my surgery, a local news story began to run about a young woman that needed a bone marrow donation. She was adopted and thus her family members weren't a match. She had to rely on the National Bone Marrow Donation Registry. I couldn't stop thinking about her. I did a little research and found out how the process typically works to get registered, but I didn't sign up. Being in graduate school and working full time, I hardly had time to remember to feed the cats let alone sign up to be a bone marrow doner.

The girl's story was never far from the back of my mind. I remember breathing a sigh of relief that Christmas when the news ran a short clip annoucing a match had been found. Someone had recently registered as a doner and they ended up being a perfect fit. Such an amazing gift that one stranger was willing to give another, during the season of giving none the less.

A few months later, school was winding down and graduation day was fast approaching. I found a rare opportunity to lay in bed and watch an episode of Grey's Antamony. I'm sure you remember this one: It was when Izzy had to donate marrow to her daughter she had put up for adoption? Sad, sad stuff.
It was then that I remembered my research, the girl that needed a doner and how to sign up. I logged onto the website and two days later I was sitting on the sofa in my little one bedroom apartment swapping my mouth and filling out my profile. "I could do this" I told myself as I licked the envelope and got it ready for mailing.

While preparing my packet and reading the informational brochure I learned that people of mixed race are in the most need for doners and that those of Anglo-Saxon decent are the least likely to need the help of the National Registry. I still sent of my packet, I figured even if I wasn't matched, a knew atleast tried.

Over the years I have kept my profile up to date but never gave it much thought.
This past weekend I heard a story about a friend of a friend who was matched to give marrow and that he would need to go through the harder of the two procedures. My Mom even commented on how difficult that would be and wondered how much it would hurt. I nodded and in the back of my mind I wondered, will I ever be matched?

Imagine my surprise when Monday afternoon I got home from work and found a letter in my mail box from the National Bone Marrow Registry. I typically only get emails from them but from the look of the envelope with the "You Could Be A Match" stamp on it appeared to be junk.I truly thought they were reaching out for donations or updating me on their procedures and I almost tossed the letter without reading it.

I'm glad I opened it.

Inside was a letter explaining that I was matched to someone in need. The letter explained that the person was still early in their decision process but doctors wanted to move quickly to get a doner set up so when the decision was made, everyone could act quickly.

I called the number listed in the letter and hoped for the best. The woman who answered explained the process, the types of procedures I could go through, the risks and the typical process. She then got to the medical questions, I flunked the first one: Are you pregnant?

The woman sighed when I said yes. She told me there weren't many people assigned to this case. But because I was pregnant I couldn't donate. My profile was place inactive until October of this year.

I'm sad to know I can't go forward in the process. While there is no way of knowing what would have happened. I know I would have tried to help. Maybe I wouldn't have been as good of a match as orginally thought. Maybe the recieptent would change their mind or got better on their own. Maybe the worst possibile outcome would happen.

But I would have given it my best effort.

I won't be able to be a part of this journey for someone who so desperately needs help. But this experience has proven one thing to me. I'm not afraid to help again.

Sure, there will be blood work and needles. If I'm selected I'll either be hooked up to a machine for several hours that will remove my blood from one arm and replace it in the other or they'll have to drill my marrow out of me. As painful as that sounds, I'm still up for the challenge.

Last night I said a long prayer for the person in need. I hope there is someone else out there who is just like me, who is healthy, not pregnant and willing to help.

And who knows, maybe October will roll around and the need will still be there.

Best of Luck Whoever You Are. I'm so very sorry I couldn't help.

21 Week Letter

Good Morning Baby Berg-

Happy 21st week. How goes it in there? According to what I've been reading you weight about 3/4 of a pound and are about as long as a carrot. To be honest, I have no idea how to long that is. Your mama is a baby carrot eater. I haven't seen a real carrot in a good long while.

You certainly enjoy kicking around in there. You seem to be most active in the morning after breakfast. You love when we have our cranberry juice and Mama's mug of hot tea certainly gets you grooving as well. Your Daddy still hasn't felt you move yet and I know he's sad about it. Every night I offer to let him lay his hand on my belly to see if he can feel you. Lately he's been telling me he doesn't want to try until he know he can. Sometimes he can be really silly. It's not like you're sending me your schedule of martial arts classes yet :)  I have a feeling his time will come soon enough.

We've been working out more in the past week. You have no idea how much your Mama misses her workouts. During our first trimester I was just plain too tired and by the time the second trimester rolled around we were just plain too busy. Thankfully, there has been a lull in our schedule so I've been working in workouts where ever I can. Pilate's is really helping my hip feel better..... you know you can move off of it at anytime right? And since the weather has been so beautiful, unlike our typical February deal of ice and snow, we've been out walking a few times. It feels so good to feel the breath the fresh air and watch the kids play. Before long, you'll be doing the exact same thing.

We have so many big dreams for you, Baby Berg. I can't wait for you to get here so we can take your stroller out for walks and enjoy the sunshine. Our neighborhood is full of really awesome sidewalks. It won't be long before you're running down them, riding your bike and coloring them with chalk. I can't wait to show that to you. We also have a great cul-de-sac. You'll learn to ride your bike there I bet.

Big days are ahead of us. Next Friday we'll get to see you again. It's been awhile hasn't it? With any luck you'll be growing long and lean just like the last time. We're excited to see you floating around in there. And we're even more excited to find out who you are. Little girl or little boy? I guess we'll just have to wait and see. My money still on boy.

And what until you see the surprise we have worked out for your Grandparents! They will flip!

We love you Baby Berg.

    • My response was "NO, WAY!"
    • It woke me up from a solid sleep
    • It also made me realize how much I really want a boy but how thrilled I'd be if Baby Berg was a girl
  • Yesterday I peed at least 22 times.
  • My husband won't stop following me around the house asking me what I ate
  • Sophie is so mad FIL is here. I feel for her. She just meowed and meowed at me last night. She senses the stress too.
  • I offered to make a pot roast Sunday night and FIL turned up his nose. If looks could kill.

20 Week Letter

Dear Baby Berg:

I know, I say this every week. But seriously, how on earth are you half baked already? 20 WEEKS!

July seems like a lifetime away, but I know, it's really not that far at all.  I think back to October when we first found out we were pregnant with you. That too seems like a lifetime ago. But 20 weeks of pregnancy, well that time just flew by. It really, really did.

According to the experts, you are the size of a cantaloupe this week. Yikes! That's huge, kid. Apparently by 20 weeks, I am supposed to be suffering from heart burn, leg cramps and constipation. However, for whatever reason, I have none of these issues. Thanks Buddy, I appreciate the break from the havoc.

This week your Daddy and I took you to your very first concert. You were quite the mover and shaker through the whole thing. What I found the most interesting, you knew some of the songs. We listen to them in the car a lot. If a song was played that you knew, you were way more active. I was so impressed by this. Music has always played a huge role in my life. I can play several instruments, I sang in a few choirs, I'm always on the hunt for something new and different music wise. I hope you will treasure music too. Some man of life's problems can be quelled and cured with music.

In 18 days we'll finally get to know who you are. While I could kick our doctor for not letting me schedule your ultrasound earlier, I am thrilled that the date has finally been set. We really don't care either way if you're a boy or a girl, we just want you to be happy and healthy. And based on the amount of movement I'm feeling, I think it's safe to say, all is well.

We love you Baby.

Well, I Didn't Get the Fat Mom Sticker

But my child might star in his or her own save the children commerical at birth.

Oh dear.

At the first two doctor's appointments I gained 4 and 3.5 pound respectively. While it was hard to stand on the scale and hear that, I knew it was all apart of pregnancy.

However, at both of those appointments, I thought the numbers seemed off. When comparing weights from my home scale to the doctor's scale, I always weighed 3-4 pounds heavier then I was weighing at home. I chalked it up to difference in scales until I remember, at the past two appointments, I really had to pee.

At my doctor's office there is a big sign on the doors to the exam rooms that say "DO NOT EMPTY YOUR BLADDER BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT."

At my first appointment, I took that warning seriously, only to discover they just needed the sample I brought with me. You know, the one I carried in in the LV purse :)

At my second appointment, I lost my sample cup. Don't worry, I lost it prior to peeing in it. There isn't a random cup of pee sitting under my car seat or lost in the fridge somewhere, promise.
Thus, I went in having to pee so I could give a new sample. Which I did, AFTER  I got weighed.

At this appointment, I used the restroom in the waiting room prior to my appointment.

The nurse took my weight and said "oh, you gained a half a pound, that's great."

I smiled and took my seat on the table.

Mr. Berg raised an eyebrow.

I said nothing.

A few minutes later in walked the Dr. I immediately liked her, she was sweet, funny and very informative. We discussed the bleeding issue from last month. She reviewed everything in my chart about it and said "Honestly, whatever caused it, was no big deal, everything surrounding the baby is fine. Not that it doesn't make it scary, it is. But there is not reason to be concerned."

At this point, I decided I really liked her and dubbed her Dr. Perky Pants.

Apparently, Mr. Berg and Dr. Perky Pants are in cahoots. She looked at the weight on my chart and said "You aren't gaining enough."

Oh?

"You gained, 4, then 3.5 and now .5?"

Errhhhmmmm.... "Well, actually, those first two numbers might be off. You see...." and I continued on to explain the whole full bladder dilemma from the past two months.

"Then, you REALLY aren't gaining enough." She said.

Crap!

I wanted to throw the fat mom sticker in her face but I decided against that.

Instead I gave her a list of everything I eat on a daily basis, right down to the fists full of animal crackers and the random peanut butter cups.

She listened intently and said "You're a WWer aren't you?"

What? Now we're going to hate on WW? But, but, but.... (these are the thoughts going through my head"

I was ready to hate her but instead she really surprised me.
She understood my goal of eating a healthy and varied diet. She also understood when I told her that a lot things still don't sit well in my stomach, like fried foods or heavily saturated or buttered foods. She gave me a lot of good tips to add an extra English muffin to my meals or to toss some extra olive oil on my salads and veggies and switch to fuller fat cheese. I really appreciated that she didn't just tell me to eat everything in sight and throw caution to the wind. I have a feeling, a few of the doctors in my practice would have done just that.

Of course, Mr. Berg is now making it his personal mission to get me to eat more. He made me ice cream last night and watched as I ate it.

I'll do a better job, this I promise. But I'm willing to bet, by the 3rd Tri, you'll be rolling me into the doctor's office. I know my body, I know my genetics. It will happen.

100 (Meaningful) Things About Me

  1. I am the first born child to my parents,  the first born of our 5th generation company and the first born girl on my Dad's side of the family in as many generations. I accomplished a lot just by showing up.
  2. I have always driven a Ford. While I appreciate and love other brands, I always come back to Fords.
  3. I have always owned a cat, since the day I was born. Sophie and Bob are numbers 4 and 5.
  4. I do not prefer cats to dogs, it's very much the opposite. However, I'll probably always have a cat.
  5. I have naturally curly hair which I hated up until my senior year of high school.
  6. I straighten my naturally curly hair 3 to 4 times every month. I like knowing that I have an alter ego.
  7. I cannot spell worth a shit, however I love to write. I think spell check on computers and my android have only increased my ability to misspell.
  8. A happy day for me is one spent in the kitchen. I am constantly learning how to make new and different things. This annoys Mr. Berg, he hardly gets the same meal twice.
  9. Mr. Berg isn't just the love of my life, he saved me. Had he not come along when he did, I have no idea where I'd be.
  10. The years prior to Mr. Berg coming along where the darkest and happiest moments of my life. I had amazing highs, and incredible lows.
  11. I have an addiction to Sandals Resorts. It is not pretty. I am only realizing this addiction now that I have zero dollars to spend at a Sandals Resort. So far I have visited Sandals Antigua, Sandals Dunn's River (now closed) and Sandals's Grande Riviera.
  12. Sophie and Bob reflect Mr. Berg and my personalities exactly. Sophie and I are independent, enjoy spending time by ourselves, are vocal when displeased and like to pick at food all day. Bob and Mr. Berg are co-dependant, hate to be alone and make friends every quickly. They also get very nervous if they aren't sure when their next meal is coming along.
  13. I havere-reading the Harry Potter Series atleast four times. I'm gearing up for round five this summer.
  14. Fall is my favorite season. I get so excited to buy pumpkins and corn stalks and decorate our house. I also get excited for apple cider and pumpkin pie.
  15. I don't talk about my mother-in law very much. I don't have a lot of say when it comes to her.
  16. I own an amazing amount of shoes, sandals, flip-flops etc. It is pathetic. But I always find room for one more :)
  17. My Mom is my favorite person in the entire world. She cracks me up on a daily basis and is never at a loss for words.
  18. I would love to travel the world. On my current list of places to go: Nappa Valley/ Sonoma, St. Lucia, The Bahamas, Italy, China, Korea, Greece, Hawaii, Exotic Western Caribbean and New Orleans.
  19. My brother is probably my best friend, however, I do a terrible job of keeping up with him. He talks to Mr. Berg way more then he talks to me.
  20. On that note, I do a terrible job of keeping up with all of my friends. It's not that I don't care, I just don't think about it.
  21. To be honest, I live in my head a lot. The wheels are always going, I'm always thinking about something. I have a terrible time falling asleep some nights.
  22. GI Joe was the only other man I ever thought I would marry. I truly loved him. However, it was a very one sided love. I was always fighting the battle to make him love me. It wasn't ever meant to be. I'm glad I figured that out, even if it was the hard way.
  23. Despite all the badness surrounding GI Joe and our relationship. I still look back on it fondly and I'm grateful for the experience.
  24. When I was little I wanted to be a veterinarian more then anything in the world. Too bad I hate needs and blood makes me vomit.
  25. Related to blood and vomit. What exactly will I do when I have Baby Berg, how will I handle that?
  26. Also related to blood and vomit. Bob pukes at least three times a week, I never fail to clean it up. It has never made me heave. Bob also had his penis removed. I had to rub neosporin on his incision for weeks. That never bothered me once either. Amazing, really.
  27. People often tell me how clear and nice my skin is..... That is a bold face lie. I know it! I'm constantly breaking out.
  28. With that said, perhaps I should thank Armani for developing a wonderful brand of liquid makeup that covers said blemishes.
  29. Diet Pepsi is "the cure in a can" for me. Bad Day? Diet Pepsi. Headache? Diet Pepsi. Not Enough Sleep? Diet Pepsi. Car Wreck? Diet Pepsi.
  30. Wine is a "cure in a bottle" for me. However, it is often more socially acceptable to drink Diet Pepsi at 8:45am while attending an office meeting.
  31. I'm being groomed to run an HR department here at Family Owned Inc. I don't feel adult enough to run it yet. It kind of scares me. But I'm sure I'll do just fine, once I figure out how to "own it"
  32. I didn't realize I could be good at life until I was in 8th grade and a guidance counselor believed in me.
  33. I attach songs to specific periods in my life. When they come on my ipod I can literally remember every detail of the moments I've attached them to. Otherwise, those memories are just fuzzy thoughts buried somewhere deep in my brain.
  34. I love to listen to sad songs on my car radio when I'm driving at night. I revisit moments in my life and analyze how far I've come or not so far in some cases.
  35. My Dad's mom died long before I was born. Yet, I miss her every day.
  36. I cannot wait to become a Mom.
  37. Mr. Berg worries because he didn't have much of a role model when it comes to parents. I hope he'll see for himself that he had plenty of parental role models, they just weren't his actual parents.
  38. I have no doubt he'll be an amazing father.
  39. I miss owning a dog. Especially when I'm home alone for a few days at a time when Mr. Berg goes away on business. Sophie and Bob are lovely, but they offer no protection other then to be thrown at an intruder. And seeing as they don't have front claws, again, useless. And on top of that, how capable would I be to throw 20 pounds of blubber? Not very....
  40. I decided early on that I would have to find the humor in every day situations at Family Owned Inc in order to survive. That doesn't stop me from having my heartbroken, but it helps.
  41. I struggle at understanding how I'll survive motherhood, full time job and potential ownership of a company. All in all, I'll probably do just fine. It's the unknown that gets to me though.
  42. If I don't see the ocean at least once every other month I get antsy. Thank goodness for the family beach house.
  43. I have never seen stars like I did when I lived in Central Virginia. I wish I could explain it. They were beautiful.
  44. Alaska was the most amazing experience of my life. Standing on top of a glacier in the middle no where... it made me realize that all the things I worry about are so minimal compared to the greatness of the planet we live on.
  45. Wine is a food group, in case you weren't aware
  46. When I was very small I always felt like there was someone I was supposed to meet. When I was 8, I learned about my Dad's mom, who had died when he was 12. That's when I realized who was missing.
  47. I never met her, but I talk to her almost every day.
  48. I grew up in and continue to live in Central PA. Virginia is my true home.
  49. I could eat sushi every day and not grow tired of it.
  50. Thong underpants befuddle me. Why do I keep wearing them, they are not comfortable.
  51. David Gray is amazing.
  52. The Counting Crow have written the sound track of my life.
  53. Lyle Lovette would probably want to marry me if he met me. I would totally marry him.
  54. Yes, I know what Lyle Lovette looks like.
  55. Have you heard that man sing? Enough said.
  56. I miss playing the piano.
  57. I still get a little bit nervous every time I am asked to speak in front of people, but I love it. I think the nervousness is what helps me do well.
  58. I can't wait to wear reading glasses. (Don't throw shit at me, Mom)
  59. I have named my future children. Mr. Berg has yet to approve these names, in fact, he won't even talk baby names.
  60. If my brother were to ever die before me, my world would absolutely stop.
  61. He's supposed to always be there, it's just the way my mind works.
  62. My Dad's Dad died nearly four years ago. I work in the same place he did. I pass his office every day, I sit in it three times a month for management meetings. None of this phases me, but the minute I see his picture, I feel like a knife is stabbing me.
  63. I am so mad at him for dying. It's not like he planned it, but still
  64. The day he died, he bought a new car and two new pairs of shoes. Obviously he wasn't planning on dying.
  65. It didn't stop me from kicking his grave stone the last time I paid him a visit.
  66. Clearly, I have a lot of unresolved issues there.
  67. Mr. Berg would be really mad if he knew I admitted that to an Internet full of complete strangers
  68. My life is an open book...... 95% of the time.
  69. My life is not an open book for my extended family. I prefer them to know as little about me as possible. Working in a family business will do that to you.
  70. I started working on this list in September of 2010.
  71. I have an amazing ability to procrastinate when I feel compelled to.
  72. Mr. Berg and I are planning our 5 year wedding anniversary trip, in two and a half years :) Our current choices are Nappa Valley or St. Lucia. St. Lucia will probably win. Truth be told, we will probably end up back in Jamaica
  73. I cannot wait to take my children to Disney World, Mr. Berg and I talk about that all the time.
  74. I didn't realize how much I loved running and spinning until I stopped doing them.
  75. My mind is constantly trying to put the plan together for raising Baby Berg for the first year. I need to fit a 40 hour work week into 4 days, good luck J-Berg.
  76. My husband's best friend's Mother (follow that?) is my unofficial Mother in Law. She means the world to me and I tell her that every time I see her.
  77. When the going gets tough, I give myself mental pep talks or mental butt kickings in the shower
  78. Speaking of things I do in the shower, other then shower. Pray. I pray my best prayers in the shower. I think it's because there are zero distractions and I have to focus on just one thing.
  79. I really enjoy doing laundry. I think it's because I grew up working in a laundromat. It just seems so normal to me.
  80. Yes, you read that right. My family owns laundromats. I paid for my college education in quarters, literally.
  81. Mr. Berg had been planning a very awesome trip for my 30th birthday. On my 30th birthday this year, we will have a two month old. No cool birthday getaway for me. That's okay, I'll have better things to do :)
  82. I am still perfecting the perfect chicken picatta. I've nearly got it.
  83. Mr. Berg is my favorite travel companion. We're both pretty good travelers and we're always up for a decent adventure. Plus,  we love seeing the world and experiencing local cultures.
  84. I haven't had a bad cold since March of 2011.
  85. I crave structure. When things go awry, I get really antsy.
  86. I love to pop a good pimple.
  87. I have never been a fan of red meat, it's a texture issue. Meanwhile, I'll eat the heck of out some seafood.
  88. Raw Oysters with a vinegar based mignonette are my all time favorite food.
  89. Nothing in this world can't be solved without a good bottle of wine.
  90. Working in a male dominated industry has never been a problem for me. In fact, I prefer it. But sometimes it does make me laugh. Like when I look around at a meeting and realize I'm the only one wearing pink in a sea of dark suits. Better yet, when I'm sitting in a board room and everyone else has sleek silver coffee tumblers and mine is covered in flowers and says Lilly Pulitzer on it.
  91. Speaking of our girl Lilly. What are the odds that my one size too big Lilly dress will fit when I'm say.... 8 months pregnant? A girl can dream of wearing Lilly to her shower, right?
  92. I am typically pretty calm and a go with the flow type girl, on the outside. On the inside, totally different story.
  93. When driving down Route 81 heading south, there is a point in the highway where the road curves and you get your first full view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I always let out a huge sigh when I get to that place, without even realizing what I'm doing. I saw those mountains every  day for 5 years. I miss them so much now.
  94. Not a week goes by that I do not think about GI Joe. Typically the thoughts are fleeting and end up with me thinking "hmmm, hope he's doing okay." Some people just leave really deep marks on your heart. I can't explain it any better then that.
  95. I love when Mr. Berg goes away for the weekend and I have the place to myself. I typically clear my schedule and enjoy the peace and quiet. When I'm not pregnant, I drink lots of wine and watch girlie movies. I also let Sophie sleep in the bed with me.
  96. In college I always had roommates and the first two places I lived in during graduate school where with roommates. I really thought I'd love living alone. I finally moved into an apartment by myself and I hated it. I never slept well and I was often lonely, even with two cats.
  97. My house is almost always clean, picked up and organized. I grew up in a house that always was, so it just made sense to me to keep things that way. Mr. Berg never had that but very much appericaites it now.
  98. I love having company over. I love cooking for others, getting to use my cool kitchen gadgets and seeing my friends and family.
  99. I truly don't have any regrets in my life. I honestly believe that everything I have said, done, experienced was meant to be and got me to where I am today.
  100. When all is said and done, even if that ends up being tomorrow. I can truly say that I have lived a good life and my time here was well spent.

A Recent Converstation

Yesterday I attended a round table discussion held at one of our many local colleges. The leader of the discussion group is a retired economics professor. He has stayed active at the college and still teaches a class or two each semester.

He is witty, intelligent and very "with it" when it comes to dealing with Generation Y. I assume many years of teaching higher education will do that to you. I have also found him to be very endearing and I always enjoy the conversations we have.

As our session was wrapping up he asked me how my pregnancy was progressing. I told him that all was well and I couldn't believe I was also half way done.

He then asked me a loaded question:

#1. Are you planning on having a natural birth or doing anything unique such as a water birth or home birth? He explained that the reason why he asked is because a friend of his daughter in law recently gave birth at home in her bathtub.  (I'm sure this is great for some people, it is not my idea of a good time)

Knowing "Joe" I knew he wasn't asking to be intrusive. He was legitimately curious and wanted to discuss the options.

I gave him a knowing and smile and said "You know, I build hospitals, my company does work in existing hospitals every day. I really have a lot of respect for them and the important role they play in our community. Plus, in my experience, I have found they are full of experts. I think that is where I should be when this baby decides to enter the world."
"And as for a natural birthday, my view of pain medication has was been: early and often."

He laughed for a few minutes and said "I couldn't agree with you more."

The Other Kind of Mom

Growing up, I had the privledge of having a stay at home mom. She was there for every illness, every bump, every bruise, every broken heart. She packed our lunches, checked our homework, chaperoned our field trips and make cupcakes for every class party known to man. She never complained (that I could hear) and she did it all with passion and courage.

My dad worked long hours to build his business and his name. I know it wasn't easy for either of them. He worked long days, often had meeting to attending in the evenings and on the weekends he was working at his second small business. He wasn't around a lot and it made for some very long days and long nights for my mom, that I am sure of.

But together they made it work and my brother and I grew up in a stable, loving enviroment. They attended our school and sporting events, they supported us in every way possible and they were always there for us. They provided for us in every possible way and for that I am grateful. I know my brother is as well.

I intend to be that sort of parent. I will be there for the school plays and sporting events. I will attend class parties and field trips, but it won't be all of them. I will get them on and off the bus, but probably not both on the same day and probably not all the time. I will double check their home work and pack their lunches, but I'll be packing my lunch and finishing up my work load too.

You see, I will be the other kind of mom too. The kind that works outside of the home.

My babies will not be breastfed, they'll get their formula from a bottle. Partly because of a short maternity leave, partly because of an non breastfeeding friendly working environment and partly because I believe formula will work best of our family. (Flame away, I'll be wearing my fire suit).

Four days a week, my child will be under the care of either his/her Grandmom (my mom) or a Nanny. My hope and best intentions are to work from home one day a week.

I won't have weekday play dates or trips to the library or Mommy and Me classes. I hope to find Friday options, I hope my mom can take them. But I know my options are limited to Friday through Sunday.

I won't be there when they wake up from every nap, to give every kiss when they bump their heads, to listen to every dream they can dream. I will miss things, big things, small things, mundane things, monumental things. I know this, I'm prepared for this.

I know that someday sooner my explorer will be packed with not long a hard hat, safety vest and glasses, but with a stroller, 3 outfit changes, twenty diapers, bottles, juice cups and a maze of baby toys. I'll balance my brief case and blackberry with sleepy sheep and car seat bases.

I am prepared for the strain this delicate balance will put on my personal and professional life. I am prepared for the strain it will put on my marriage and I am prepared for the day when I'll be crying in the daycare parking lot praying for something to give.
But I know in the end, it will all be so worth it. And I'm prepared for that too.
I'm going to be the other kind of mom, but I'm going to be a good mom. Stay at home, work from home, work out of the home, it doesn't much matter. There are good moms and not so good moms in every one of those environments.

I will make it work.
Even if right now, at this very moment, I have no idea how.

Week 19 Letter

Good Morning Baby Berg-

According to experts of the weekly emails your Mommy receives about your progress, you are now the size of a mango. That's pretty big if you ask me.

Every day I feel more and more bumping and thumping from you. On Thursday I was convinced you were swimming sprints in there. You are most active just after lunch and into the evening. It is so fun to just sit still and feel you do your thing in there. Total dance party! I think your Daddy is jealous, he really wants to feel you too.
Twice I've tried to get him to sit quietly with his hand on my belly so he can feel you. Unfortuantely, you decide it's not worth your time to move around and Daddy gets impatient. Oh well, it won't be long and you'll be moving more and Daddy will finally get his moment with you.

This week we are interviewing two different peditricans for you. I think we'll probably end up going with our first choice practice that we are meeting with tomorrow. However, your Dad felt it important to explore all our options. So we'll meet with practice choice number two on Wednesday. And Thursday is yet another Doctor's appointment. This time for you and me. This appointment will be a huge deal. We will finally get to schedule the ultrasound that will reveal who you really are. Bets are being placed, Baby Berg. We are so excited.

I love you and I hope all is well in there.
Mama.

Friday Brain Dump

Here Goes It:
  • E gave me a bible versus to pray while I am praying for her husband. I am so glad she did. I've been having a lot of trouble finding the words to pray for him, effectively. I can think of plenty of terrible things to pray for when it comes to him. But I'm willing to bet God wouldn't be thrilled by any of those things
  • Why does every maternity top either come with a back tie or a bow..... or worse, both. WHY? I'm going to be a big as the Titanic in another few months.... do I really need a bow?
  • If Baby Berg is not a boy, I will fall off the ultrasound chair. No lie.
  • Tomorrow the Mama and I are going shopping. Snow is in the forecast, snow be damned. We are going shopping.
  • Mr. Berg has an epic man cold. And by epic, I mean totally and completely epic. He is miserable and there is not a thing that can be done to make it better for him. I feel terrible for him, but I don't want to touch him either.
  • I have to go to the grocery store. I'd rather just order pizza for a week.
  • Speaking of grocery stores...I really need to make my list..... what are we eating this week?
  • There is a leftovers dish in my fridge. It has an herb crust pork chop, green beans and couscous in it. And I don't want to eat it. But I'll probably make myself because it's food and it's free.
  • I had to pick my parent's dog up at the kennel yesterday. They made me show photo id. For real? Do you really think I drove all the way out to BFE just to steal someones poorly mannered, geriatric Labrador? For real? Apparently, the answer is yes.
  • My motivation to do anything today is fading....

This Akward Moment, Brought to You by.....

Target!

Yesterday evening I had some time to kill between checking on my parent's dog and my hair appointment. Likeany normal American working woman (working as in Full Time not In a Hotel Room) I took the opportunity to run a few errands. Mainly, stop at Target.

I picked up a few necessities and was on my way to pick up cotton balls and Tylenol, when I considered stopping by the maternity clothes section to explore the clearance rack. I ended up with cotton balls, never made it over to the Tylenol section.... guess who will be back at Target tomorrow? This girl.

My local Target is a little on the small side. Thus, our sections are sort of crammed together much like sardines in a can. The maternity clothing section is wedged between the averaged sized ladies clothing and the plus sized clothing. (I know there's a prettier way of putting that, but I can't think of anything right now).

Anyway....

The maternity clothing and the plus sized clothing almost intermingle at certain points, often making it difficult to navigate. One minute you're looking at pants with a belly band on them and the next your looking at pants with a totally different type of elastic. Often leaving you to wonder, which section am I in? It's hard to tell sometimes.

As I flipped through the clearance rack, I noticed a kind looking elderly woman on the opposite side of the rack doing the same thing. I shuffled through a few hangers, pulled out a shirt and thought to myself.... this isn't for pregnant ladies.

At the same time, the woman across from me glanced up with the same puzzled expression as me.

We gave each other half smiles and mild "ohs" and switches places.

She ended up picking out the shirt I had first selected.

I walked away with a dress and a tank top.

We never acknowledged each other again.

On My Mind, Today

Lately there has been a lot on my mind and I just don't know where to go with it. Most of it is really random and silly, but other things are a bit heavier.

For starters, the silly things:

I really miss running. I know I could run if I wanted to, there is no law saying I can't. I'm just not. Mostly because it's cold outside, I become more and more clumsy every day and finally, I get winded walking up the steps. Do you know what actual running would do to me? I'd die, simple as that.

Also, I'm afraid of getting to the opposite of my neighborhood and having to pee. I don't know the neighbors on that end, I can't just use anyone's bathroom now can I?

I am really anxious to find out what Baby Berg is. I'm very much convinced there's a boy in there. But what if I'm wrong? What if all my feelings are off? I won't be upset if I find out we're having a girl. If anything, I'll be thrilled at the thought of having a daughter. But I'll still be mad at myself for being wrong. Does that even make sense?

We'll be having pulled pork sandwiches for Valentine's Day. Something about that just seems wrong.

We are interviewing two pediatricians offices next week. What if I really hate both of them? What if I don't ask the right questions? Better yet, what if Mr. Berg asks too many questions?

Bob bit his babysitter this past weekend. Bob doesn't bite people, ever. If the sitter had said Sophie did it, I wouldn't have thought twice. She's the feisty one. Bob on the other hand is a gentle, docile, giant. I can count on one hand the number of times he's bitten me. All the bites happened because I was messing with his sore hips or scarred up belly. He only bites if he's hurting. So, I feel confident that the sitter was playing too rough and he let her know. But I still feel bad about it.

And for the heavy stuff:

We have yet to locate a replacement for me with the mentoring program I volunteer with. I know I should be concerned and I'm really not. I truly feel like after May 8th, it won't be my problem anymore. With that said, it bothers me that I'm not more concerned about it. I just can't bring myself to be concerned.

E and I have been talking a lot lately. Be it email or the phone, there aren't too many days that go by that we aren't in contact. On Monday she told me that she's been praying that God silence the mouths of those who do not wish for E to reconcile with her husband. While almost no one knows what is going on, there are a select few people who do. Most have been very supportive, one couple has not.
I don't know if I support reconciliation, I don't know if it's my place to hope for one outcome or another. I've been questioning God a lot lately. If she needs these voices to be silenced, why hasn't mine? Is it because I don't know if she should or not? Is it because I believe in my heart of hearts that he's not coming back?
I'm choosing to believe, that God is urging me to be there for E because regardless of the outcome of this terrible situation, I will support her.
If they do reconcile, I'll dance at their 50th wedding anniversary party. If he never speaks to her again, I'll be there with hugs and wine and love.

I can't begin to say what I would do if I were in that situation. I don't think it's my place to tell E what to do.
So, I'm just going to listen instead.

Sooner then later, I will have to approach my "family" as in those that I work with, about changing my schedule to allow me to be home with Baby Berg one day a week. I know this is going to go over like a turd in the punch bowl. I dread it every single day. But it needs to be done.

With any luck, I will be 100% debt free by the end of the March. I'm thrilled! I've been very concerned about my lingering credit card debt. It is 100% my fault for having it. I wish I could say it was the result of this, that or the other more reasonable excuse. But not, my debt, my problem.

I'll be taking 12 weeks of medical leave when Baby Berg is born. My income will be just about zero for most of that. Thus, it's important to me that I have as few expenses as possible. Credit card debt does not need to be one of them.

And yes, I'm still just as concerned as ever about the fat mom sticker on my medical chart at the doctor's office. So much so, that I weigh myself every morning and every night. I'm still holding strong at 7.5 above my prepregnancy weight.

Who's determined to not get the dumb sticker? This girl!

18 Week Letter

Good Morning Baby Berg-

I think I should start calling you wiggle worm because that it definately what you've been lately. First thing in the morning, just before bedtime and any time we've eaten, I feel you moving all over the place in there. While I've been feeling you for about 2 weeks now, the past few days have certainly shown an increase.

It seems to make sense. Based on everything I've been reading, you certainly have a lot to do in there. Flex your muscles, hiccup, yawn.... it appears the possibilites are endless. I love feeling you move. You often catch me off guard as I'm just not used to it yet. Meanwhile, your Daddy is feeling awfully left out. Friday we were in the car, talking away when suddenly I felt you kick. Your Daddy quickly moved his hand over my belly and sadly exclaimed "I guess I can't feel it yet." I keep reminding him that his time is coming soon.

People are starting to wager guesses at who you might be. While shopping on Friday a sales lady asked me if I was having a boy. You should have seen the smile on your Daddy's face. It was so cute.  Auntie S agrees with my prediction of boy. However, our good friend Annie in New Hampshire is convinced you're a girl. She won't hear of any other choice. I guess time will tell.

In other news. We visited Williamsburg this weekend. Daddy and I wanted to take one last trip just the two of us. We had a great time. We did a little shopping, looked at lots of cute baby clothes, had dinner with your great Aunt and Uncle and helped Auntie S celebrate the arrival of Sofia. All in all it was a great time.

We also watched the Patriots lose the Super Bowl in an increidibly embarrassing fashion. I guess our super cool Pats T-Shirt wasn't as lucky as we thought. Oh well, we had a good time watching the commericals and your Daddy sure did enjoy his wings.

I hope you're having an awesome time in there. I'm trying to remember to feed us more frequent and smaller meals. I could probably do a better job of that, huh?

Love You Baby Berg, the world's greatest wiggle worm!

It Is Done

I kept saying I was going to do it. I kept telling myself it needed to be done. A few weeks ago I knew I had made the right call, but still. I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

Today, I finally pulled off the band-aid.

I handed in my resignation to my Mentoring Program. With a few taps to the keyboard and a huge deep breathe, I clicked send and away it went.

Dand V-
I wanted to give you a quick heads up regarding Our Mentoring Program.
I’m not sure if you are aware or not, but I am pregnant with my first child, due in July. This will definitely be a new and exciting endeavor for my husband and I. With that said, I will no longer be able to carry out my duties as Mentoring Coordinator following the wrap up for the 2011-2012 school year. I would still like to keep Family Owned Inc. on our yearly tour schedule and I will be happy to assist in any other way that I can. I just won’t have enough time in my day to handle the day to day tasks, scheduling and bi-weekly meetings.
Is there anyone that you either of you have in mind to replace me? I had two people in mind here at Family Owned, however, one is having his second child this fall and the other has recently been assigned to projects that are not local.
This was obviously a tough decision to make, however, I feel like I will be leaving the Mentoring Program in a better condition then when I came to it. I’m sure someone else can take the reigns and make it even bigger and better.
Let me know what you think or if you have anyone else in mind. We still have plenty of time before the New Year beings.
One more thing- I haven’t mentioned to anyone else involved in the program that I am leaving. I wanted you both to be the first to know so we can make as smooth a transition as possible.

And just like that, it's almost over.

I didn't think it would hurt like it does. I figured it would be easy to say goodbye, the program is in great hands and is certainly well loved by so many. It's gotten to the point where it can run itself, provided a responsible adult is in charge. And seriously, how responsible do they really need to be? They put me in charge didn't they?

The thought crossed my mind that the students might miss me. And then I remembered the program is made up of mostly high school boys, they won't care that I'm gone. They probably won't even notice.

When I think back on all the time and engery I spent on the program, all the help that came from no where, all the ideas that came to us as we were flying by the seat of our pants. We did good. I did good.

I'm leaving the place in a much better condition then when I found it. It is a strong and viable program. It had a great foundation. Some one can make it even better then I can. It deserves fresh blood and I deserve a break.

Besides, come July, I'm going to have somone way cooler to hang out with on Thursday nights. And I cannot wait to meet them.

Wild Wednesday

My random thoughts for the day:

1. For the past two days I have felt some what like crap. Standing for long periods of time makes my stomach hurt in the worst of ways. I yacked my breakfast yesterday morning and if it wasn't for a bottle of water and two stick of gum, today's breakfast would have met the same fate.
2. I nearly passed out while teaching JA today. That would've been cute. Thankfully, I was almost done my lesson and had a water bottle near by. I was able to make to the bathroom where I perched on a tiny 5th grade sized toilet and practiced my deep breathing.
3. My mom has returned to normal. I appreciate this.
4. My mom would like to care for Baby Berg two days a week. I'm down with that. I need to find care of 2 days a week. Anybody got any ideas? Otherwise, this kid is coming to work for me. 3 month old can handle construction company dealings? Am I right?
5. My job has a new headache, I cannot expand further then that. But boy would I like to.
6. I pray for E at least 30 times a day, I don't know if that's enough
7. S's  baby girl, Sofia, is due next month. I am so freaking excited!
8. My friend C is having a baby girl named Karmyn next month. Again, I am so freaking excited.
9. My friend J is having a baby boy, who will remain nameless, next month. Again, freaking out excited.
10. Baby Berg is going to be a spoiled baby. Just a soon as we find out the sex.
11. I am drinking a full calorie Coke. It is amazing!
12. Leaving for Williamsburg is a little over 24 hours. I should probably pack, or think about what I need to bring, or make copies of the baby shower games..... Details, details.......
