September is Self Improvement Month.
At least, that's what all the cool girls are saying on the WW 20's Board.
I like it.
September is the start of my favorite season, fall. It is also the month of my birthday and the month of new beginnings.
I think I'm going to embrace it and see what self improvements I can make this month.
I don't have a lot of concrete ideas in my head just yet. But I am thinking about it and hopefully tomorrow, I'll have some better answers. I've wanted to make sure the last year of my 20's is a good one, I want to challenge myself and I want to do better for myself. Let's see if I can make that happen.

Hope for the Future
My best friend is pregnant.
I just found out today, although I must admit, I had my suspicions. She's just like me, we're not good at hiding things from one another.
My first reaction was of course, excitment. She and her husband just got married in June, they are both so excited and so ready for this.
My second reaction wasn't a nice. It was a kick in the gut. We could be pregnant.
But we're not, we're not pregnant because we've put off trying twice.
And if Mr. Berg really and truly had his way, we'd still be waiting.
Its a good thing I have good negoiation skills.
I will say, I was quick to dismiss my sad thoughts.
My bestfriend is in her early 30s. She was the last of all her friends to get married. She has paid her dues. It is time and time it is.
I couldn't be more happier for her. I am elated for her.
And her pregnancy gives me hope. Hope that good things really do happen to good people. Hope that even after being on the pill for 10 years, my body just might figure it out. Hope that happiness is found just when you least expect it.
So to this new baby I say:
Baby Bean-
You have no idea how much you are wanted. Your mommy and your daddy waited and waited for you.
They knew from the minute they met, they were destine to have you. You are going to have such awesome parents and such an awesome life. Just you wait, there is so much fun to be had.
You don't know me yet, but I promise you. Your Aunt J-Berg is so excited to be a part of your life.
You can count on me, I'll be there. Just like your Mommy and your Daddy.
And your Uncle Berg, he's pretty cool too.
Stay safe and warm in there. We'll see you March.
Love Always,
Aunt J-Berg
So yeah, I was sad for a minute.
But it's not my time to be sad. It's my time to be happy, to celebrate, and to embrace my favorite friend even though she's three states away.
Good things happen.
Stay hopeful.
Be patient.
It will come, it will come.

Otherwise
I always knew our guest room was smaller then our master bedroom. I just didn't realize how much smaller it actually was until I tried to fit all of our master bedroom crap into in.
The painters came this morning. I almost kissed each and every one of them as they walked through the door. I cannot wait to see what my house looks like with fresh paint on the walls. Mr. Berg still thinks this is a waste of time and resources (money) but I know he'll come around once he sees the finish product.
Right now things look rough at our house. We have a shower curtain hanging in the garage, drying from this morning's showers. We have a pile of pillows in the guest room that's about as tall as me. Our comforter is rolled up in a ball in the corner of the guest room, our sheets and blanket are stacked on top, my workout gear is on top of that. The cats are barricaded in the basement with a baby gate. The first floor throw rugs are hanging on a drying rack in the garage. The wreaths are sitting on the roof of the Tahoe in the garage and I'm pretty sure our hanging shower caddy in on the work bench or hanging from a door knob somewhere.
Oh yes, we are klassy people this week, let me tell you.
Today the trim is getting all the attention. It will be sanded, patched, caulked and painted. Any wall dents or dings will also be addressed.
Tomorrow the real fun begins as all the color goes on the walls. I can giddy with excitement!
In other news, I completed my workout last night without killing myself. The hardest segment of the video is in the middle. It has burpees. Burpees SUCK. I was able to get through the segment, but I had to pause the video and walk around the basement so my heart rate could slow down a little bit. After a brief rest, I was back in action.
I stuck to my points too.
Tonight I have a cardio video on tape.
Remember that cold I talked about two weeks ago? It never became a full fledged cold. It stuck around for about 2 days and then it left.
Today is have a real cold. Sore sinuses, running nose, weird cough, swollen glands, the whole works. As long as it stays from the neck up, I'll let it ride and keep doing what I'm doing.
Meanwhile, where is the tylenol?
Work is nuts. But we are thankful for the very good news that we have received so far this week. Two very stressful, heart sinking situations are now behind us. We continue to thank God for his blessings, each and every day.
Our house is quiet and peaceful without FIL. I know, that's horrible to say, but it's the truth. We needed our home back. It's nice to have it just the two of us again.
Also, my parenting skills are already in jeopardy.
I am a baby gate failure.
Our cats need to be confined to the basement while the painters are here. Normally, confining them to the basement is no big deal. We put them on the basement steps, we shut the door, they get the picture.
Except, the door is being painted.
While I know they'll probably stay in the basement without the door shut when the painters are making loud noises. I don't think they will if the painters get quiet. They'll probably want to explore. Then they'll run into the painters and get scared. They'll run upstairs to the panic room only to find that door shut and then they'll freak. Bob will have a heart attack and die on the spot. Sophie will jump directly into a bucket of paint.
I have no use for a dead cat and paw prints on my carpets.
So, I bought a baby gate.
I thought it was one that was easy to put up and easy to use. The box even said so.
No such luck.
That thing is wedged into the stairwell and balancing on the banister.
It probably would be bad for children, the cats however, will survive.
Otherwise, we are fine.

Getting My Head Back in the Game
Oh lordy, do I have a lot to say today.....
First, do you hear that?..... It's silence....... Where is coming from, you ask? MY HOUSE!!
FIL pulled out of the drive way around 4:30am. Neither Mr. Berg or I heard him, he was quiet as a mouse. A mouse that spilled coffee all over my kitchen, but that's neither here nor there. He is gone and that's all that matters.
I didn't get to have lunch at home today, but I did stop in for about 5 minutes to switch out laundry and feed the cats. It was bliss I tell you, pure bliss.
Now I just need to clean up after him. That will take all night.
Speaking of cleaning up.
The painters will be pulling into my driveway at 7:30 tomorrow morning. My house needs to be in "painting shape by then. I need to vacuum and wipe down baseboard, clean off surfaces, take down curtains and put my jewelry box in the safe. Not to mention I need to scrub down shower stalls, toilets and counter tops. I do not want to be accused of being the dirty house lady.
Plus, I need to make meatloaf muffins for dinner and squeeze in a good, long workout.
And now onto workouts.... are you following?
Yes?
Good..... on to workouts.
I attempted a workout on Sunday after taking Friday and Saturday off to attend to the FIL. (insert eye roll here, please and thank you)
This is after I ate a sun dried tomato bagel and scallion cream cheese.... yeah, that didn't go well.
The bagel was nothing but processed carbs, the cream cheese, well.... I'm not so sure what's all that bad about cream cheese but let's just go with the obvious, it's high in fat and that's not cool.
I ended up with zero energy and thus didn't complete my workout. I felt drained and tired and gross.
I know it has everything to do with the lack of proper fuel in my system. I cannot expect my body to run like a well oiled machine when I'm filling it with cheap-ass (yes, a technical term) fuel.
Let's face it. I threw in the towel this weekend. I ate okay, but I ate a lot and I self medicated with wine and beer. I deserve what I got.
Today is a new day and I need to focus on getting it right.
Thus far, I have. I had my green monster smoothie this morning. For my AM snack I had pomegranate Greek yogurt. Lunch was a grilled chicken salad with low fat dressing, reduced fat blue cheese crumbles, artichoke hearts, white beans and oil olive. It was delicious and filled me up with all sorts of good things. I've had 64 ounces of water and I'll be filling up my bottle again soon.
I'm doing all the right things, I just need to stick with them.
(and lay off the peanut butter pretzels, okay?)
I will get through this hurdle, I will feel better and I will see results.
I just have to stick to it.
I did not track this weekend. I know it wasn't pretty.
Thus, I won't be eating my activity points that I earn the rest of this week. I doubt it will make up for what happened. But that's okay. It's feedback not punishment.
So, head, welcome back to the game.
Go do something with yourself :)

How J-Berg Got Her Groove Back
Well, quite technically, I haven't... yet.
The past twelve days have been a pain in the ass. I'm sorry, there's just no better way to put it. I've done everything but stand on my head to ensure my house guest's happiness. I did well on my workouts until Wednesday and then time got away from me and my routine went to crap. I've tried eating healthy, and mostly I have, but in large amounts. And there was a lot of wine and beer to be had.... it was the coping mechanism of choice.
I'm craving my normal routine, my usual place on the sofa, cats that aren't nervous wrecks and a husband who doesn't have a false perma grim plastered to his face. The past 12 days haven't been easy but they've certainly be necessary. It had been a year from FIL last visit. I'm sure the men enjoyed their reunion.
Tomorrow by 5am FIL will pull out of the driveway and our lives will return to normal, for 24 hours. Tuesday morning a painting crew will arrive to transform the left side of our 1st floor and the entire upstairs. Once again, everything will be turned upside down. At least, this time, the painters are only expected to take up three days, and they won't be sleeping in our guest room nor sitting at our dining room table.
I have healthy lunch choices stock piled in my fridge and freezer. I have a workout routine written on my weekly schedule board and I have a plan to actually track my meals instead of hoping I got the right answer.
Painters present or not, there will be meatloaf muffins for Monday and Tuesday and Pork Tacos for Wednesday and Thursday. Friday, we will grill as per tradition at the Berg house in the summer. I'll still be jumping around the basement, lifting weights, kick boxing and trying my hand at pilates (which I am really bad at) all over again.
I welcome my routine with open arms. I gladly embrace the return of normal.
I cannot wait to spend my Labor Day weekend alone with my husband. Together we will clean, cook meals and visit the movie theatre. We'll sleep in, go to bed early and whisper under the sheets.
I never thought I'd ever be so grateful for the return of Monday morning. But lo and behold, I really, really am.

Moving On
FIL is still stuck to my sofa...... and that's all I have to say (nicely) about that.
Last night was the first good night's sleep I've had since Saturday night.
It's amazing how much a good night's sleep can change your prospective about life.
I'm not feeling grumpy today. If anything, I feel refreshed.
I've been thinking a lot about my life lately. I think about all the good things that are in my life, all the amazing people in my life, all of the experiences I have had, both the good and the bad. Mostly, I'm just amazed at how wonderful my life has been. Sure, there's been a fair share of ups and downs. There are moments that have rocked me to my coreand moments where I've risen higher then I ever dreamed.
My last birthday of my 20's is approaching. I can't believe how quickly time has past in the last six years.
Am I where I thought I would be? Yes and No.
I always hoped to be married before 30. Granted, I had hoped to be married to a few others, I am so thankful, grateful and proud to be Mr. Berg's wife. He's the peas to my carrots, the ying to my yang, the all around most perfect partner for me.
As for children, I always hoped to be done having babies before I was 30. Or, at least be pregnant with my second child on the 30th birthday. I could have accomplished that goal, had Mr. Berg gotten on the stick about getting married a little faster then he did.
There is still time to be pregnant before 30. Actually.... there is still time to have a baby and be pregnant again before 30, if I really thought that was a good idea....... Lord help me, I do not think that is a good idea.
But you know what?
I have a good life, an amazing husband, a wonderful family.... I am right were I am supposed to be.

Grumpy
I am a grump!
I went to bed grumpy, I woke up grumpy and all day I have remained grumpy. Yes, I know, it's "." week, that does bring out the grump in me. However, this is a deep routed grumpiness.
I cannot get back into my normal routine and it's driving me crazy.
You see, as an HR professional, I spend a large part of my day talking to people. If I'm not talking to people, I'm thinking about people. If I'm not talking to people or thinking about people, chances are I'm listening to people. It's a wonderful environment, I love what I do. But I spend a good part of my day being over stimulated. This is difficult, even for an extrovert like myself.
My solution- quiet time.
I don't get it in the office, if I do, it's never for long and its often interrupted. As it should be, I'm at work. I'm getting paid to be with people, think about people and talk to people.
Thus, I get my quiet time outside of the office. Typically I get an hour at lunch to go home, make something to eat, and stare blankly at whatever cooking show happens to be on the Food Network while I'm there. I get another hour or so when I get home. I use this time to workout. I can sweat out my problems and frustrations and get my head into the "at home" game.
Thanks to some quiet time, by the time Mr. Berg gets home, I'm refreshed, recharged and miles away from whatever problems were bothering me at work.
Since the arrival of FIL, I haven't really had a lot of time to myself. I get home at he's there, and he's been along all day, which means I'm suddenly entertainer, chef, travel agent, history student and answerer of 200 million questions. Plus, the cats are hungry. So I feed cats, answer questions, absorb information, give directions, prep food, and sort the mail. I try to determine why the floor is sticky (it wasn't when I left), I rinse and put dishes in the dishwasher that were left on the counter. I once again explain why we happen to like our Keurig coffee maker.
I'm in survival mode.
By the time I get to bed, I'm done. My brain is shot, yet swimming with thoughts and even if I tried, I can't focus to read a book or what TV. So I sit there, in my big comfortable bed, stewing in my own thoughts.... for 15 minutes. Then Mr. Berg joins me (he doesn't want to be alone with his dad either) and the whole process of 200 millions questions starts again.
I am spent. I just want my house back. But that won't happen until next week, sort of, I'll have a house full of painters Tuesday through Thursday.
I feel guilty and conflicted and like I'm the meanest wife on the face of the planet.
It's my husband's dad. My husband deserves the opportunity to spend time with his dad. He doesn't visit often, I should just grin and bare it.
And for the most part, I am.
But I almost cried on my way to work this morning. I can't take much more.
Am I the only person who thinks 12 days is an awfully long time to visit?
Mr. Berg gets the fun job of being the successful son. I get the job of being a wife, chef and entertainer.
My time and talents at my job are ignored because my industry is unrelateable.
I wish I had the magic answer for all of this.
I wish I wasn't so darn grumpy.
